How to Manage a Case of Mumps

If your own examination of your child leads you to believe he or she is developing mumps, take the following steps:
Call your pediatrician for advice and to confirm your diagnosis.

Be sure our child gets lots of rest as long as he or she has a fever.
Provide plenty of liquids and a diet of soft foods, such as soups, cooked vegetables and fruits. However, don’t include sour fruits and juices, which can irritate swollen glands.

To ease discomfort, apply ice packs (a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a washcloth makes a good one), warm cloths or heating pads to swollen glands.

Your physician may recommend acetaminophen or ibuprofen to ease pain and reduce fever.
Caution — Never give aspirin to a child under 12 who has mumps, chickenpox, flu or any other illness you suspect being caused by a virus, such as a bad respiratory infection.
