Heightensmotivation
“Muscle conditioning classes are energetic, motivating and offer instruction from a fitness leader,” says Geoff Bagshaw, group exercise manager for Bally Total Fitness at Eaton Centre in Toronto, Ont. “All this together creates a very social environment.”
The social aspect of weight training in a group is a big part of its appeal, says Peggy Cleland, a pro-trainer for BodyPUMPand program director for the Sports Clubs of Canada in Toronto, Ont. Group muscle conditioningoffers emotional benefits as well as physical ones. “The music helps boost mood and working in a group is fun,” she says.
Marcos Prolo is a group fitness consultant for Iron Grip Barbell Co., the originator of the STRONGgroup strength program and owner of Fitness Factory in Southern California. He believes the presence of a group leader is what helps draw the crowds:
“In a group, people are less likely to quit early or skip exercises, which often happens when they workout alone,” says Prolo.
Along with heightened motivation, Cleland believes that the instructor adds an important “feel-good element” to group fitness. “An instructor who is trained to offer feedback on correct technique and acknowledge individual skills and accomplishments [helps tocreate] a comfortable and motivating atmosphere.”
